Drywood Termite Treatment in Venice — The Island’s Signature Pest

Venice Pest Control treats drywood termites in the local housing stock. Our technicians know which neighborhoods have the oldest wood and where coastal humidity keeps drywood pressure high.

Drywood treatment depends on how far the colony has spread. A colony in one piece of trim needs a different approach than galleries running through several framing members. Venice Pest Control inspects first, maps the activity, and recommends the least-invasive treatment that fits what we find.

If you own an older home on Venice Island or near the Gulf, drywood termites are part of the ownership equation. The historic core’s 1920s–1950s homes mix masonry and wood, and salt air keeps that wood humid year-round.

Venice Island. The heart of Venice drywood activity: older homes, wood trim and roof framing, and constant coastal humidity.

South Venice and Venice Gardens. Mostly 1960s–1970s concrete block. Lower drywood pressure than the island, but not zero — roof framing and trim are still wood.

Wellen Park and the West Villages. Newer block-and-stucco construction, where subterranean termites are the main concern.

Venice Pest Control handles the inspection, the species ID, the recommendation, and any spot treatment. If the house needs whole-structure fumigation, we’ll tell you why and refer you to a licensed fumigation company. Call (941) 241-1388 for a free inspection.

Drywood vs. Subterranean — Not the Same Pest

Before we recommend anything, we confirm the species. These two termites live differently, and the treatments don’t overlap:

Drywood termites. Live entirely inside wood, with no soil contact. They leave piles of hard, six-sided pellets below the wood they’re eating. Treated with spot treatment or, when the activity is widespread, whole-structure fumigation.

Subterranean termites. Live in the soil and build mud tubes up foundation walls, slab edges, and piers. Treated with a liquid soil treatment or a bait-station system — never with tenting, because the colony is in the ground outside the tent.

If you keep sweeping up what looks like coarse brown sand in the same spot, that’s probably drywood frass. Send us a clear photo, or save a spoonful in a zip-top bag for the inspection.

Spot Treatment or Fumigation — How We Decide

Spot treatment (our work). The right call when the activity is confined to wood we can reach — a window or door frame, a run of trim, a joist, a piece of furniture. We drill into the galleries and inject a labeled termiticide foam or orange-oil product, and we can treat bare, unfinished wood with a borate. You don’t have to leave home, and it costs far less than fumigation. The limit: it only treats the colonies we find.

Whole-structure fumigation (referred out). The right call when activity shows up in several rooms or framing members, in the attic, or behind finishes no one can open. We don’t fumigate, so we refer this work to a licensed fumigation company.

By the time pellets show up, a colony has usually been working for a while, and it may not be the only one. That’s why we check the surrounding wood and the attic before we recommend spot treatment.

If Your Home Needs Fumigation

The fumigation company runs the job and gives you its own prep list. In general:

  • Prep. People, pets, and live plants leave the house. Food and medicine are removed or sealed in special fumigation bags.
  • Fumigation. The house is covered with tarps and filled with a gas fumigant that reaches every piece of wood.
  • Aeration. The tarps come off, the house airs out, and the crew tests the air. No one goes back in until the readings clear.

Most jobs take two to three days. Fumigation leaves no protection behind, so a borate treatment on bare attic framing afterward is worth considering.

Paperwork for Home Sales

If a WDO inspection on a Venice home comes back positive for drywood termites, the lender or title company will usually want proof of treatment. For the treatment we do, we document the species, the areas treated, the product, and the date, and we can send it straight to the title company and agents. If the home is fumigated, the fumigation company documents its own work. Need the inspection itself? We do Florida WDO inspections on the state’s Form 13645.

What It Costs

Spot treatment is priced after the inspection, based on how many areas need treatment and how hard they are to reach. Fumigation is priced by the fumigation company, usually by the cubic volume of the house, and costs considerably more. The inspection is free, and you’ll get a straight answer on which path fits.

We recently engaged this team for our pest control needs. Adam provided an extensive overview of his services and quoted a vastly more competitive rate. After two service calls we're not only impressed by Adam's expertise but the level of service is absolutely astonishing (we're from New York and that's not easily done). They deserve 10 stars and should be everyone's choice for pest care.

My fiancé and I live in Parrish — she, I, and our two dogs were attacked by Africanized killer bees. We almost lost one of our dogs and needed to remediate the situation immediately. I contacted Adam and he was quick to respond. The team came out within 24 hours, assessed the situation and executed a successful plan to eliminate the entire hive. Thank you Adam and the entire team!

Adam was amazing. He came out the same day for a very last minute call. Not only did he spend time understanding our problem and explaining everything in detail, he also came back twice to make sure we caught the mice. We appreciated his attention so much we had him come back out to spray for ants too. Excellent service — we'll definitely continue to use this company for all of our pest needs.

Currently renting and have been using Adam throughout our lease. Adam is very responsive and thorough. He has come out to inspect the status of things before deciding what's best for our house. Appreciate his quick response and coming out when I reach out. We'd use Adam for future pest control needs when we move out of our lease! Highly recommend.

Absolutely shocked at the service these folks provide! Called on a Sunday morning and an actual person answered and scheduled our appointment for the next day. Came on time, took care of the issue, recommended simple care we can do on our own, and never tried to sell me a monthly service. Even went to a neighbor's house to analyze their situation without an appointment. The kind of service we've all forgotten about. Highly Recommend!!!

I can't say enough good things about this team! The technician showed up right on time, was incredibly professional, and took the time to explain everything. He didn't just treat the obvious spots — he inspected every corner of my home and pointed out small issues I never would have noticed. Adam gave honest, clear answers, no upselling. After the treatment I noticed results almost immediately.

Questions We Hear Every Day

Quick answers from our SWFL pest pros.

How do I know it’s drywood and not subterranean termites?

Look at what they leave behind. Drywood termites live entirely inside the wood and push out hard, six-sided pellets about the size of coarse sand or ground pepper. The pellets pile up under windowsills, baseboards, trim, and attic framing. Subterranean termites live in the soil and build pencil-width mud tubes up foundation walls, slab edges, and piers. The treatments don’t overlap, so we confirm which one you have before we recommend anything.

Why is drywood so common on Venice Island?

Venice Island’s historic core dates to the 1920s–1950s, with Mediterranean Revival and mid-century homes that mix masonry and wood, some on older foundations. Salt air off the Gulf and the Intracoastal keeps that wood humid, and drywood colonies live entirely inside it, with no soil contact. The mainland neighborhoods — Venice Gardens, South Venice, and the newer Wellen Park communities — are mostly concrete block, where subterranean termites are the bigger concern.

Can you treat drywood termites without tenting?

Often, yes. When the activity is confined to wood we can reach — a window or door frame, a run of trim, a joist, a piece of furniture — we drill into the galleries and inject a labeled termiticide foam or orange-oil product, and we can treat bare, unfinished wood with a borate. Spot treatment only reaches the colonies we find, so we check the surrounding wood and the attic first. If there’s a real chance of hidden colonies, we’ll say so.

Do you do tent fumigation?

No. We don’t fumigate. When an inspection shows drywood activity spread through the structure, or in places no one can reach, whole-structure fumigation is usually the right call, and we’ll refer you to a licensed fumigation company. We’ll walk you through what we found so you can compare their recommendation with ours.

What happens during a tent fumigation?

The fumigation company covers the house with tarps, releases a gas fumigant (sulfuryl fluoride, often sold as Vikane) that reaches every piece of wood, then removes the tarps and airs the house out. People and pets stay out the whole time, live plants come out of the house, and food and medicine are removed or sealed in special bags. No one goes back in until the air tests clear. Most jobs take two to three days, and the fumigation company gives you its own prep list and schedule.

My Venice Island home was tented years ago — do I need to tent again?

Not automatically. Fumigation doesn’t protect the house afterward, so the question is whether new colonies have moved in since. Watch for fresh pellet piles, swarmers inside in late spring or summer, or a positive WDO report during a sale. If you see any of those, an inspection tells you whether spot treatment is enough or the whole house needs attention again.

What does drywood termite treatment cost?

Spot treatment is priced after the inspection, based on how many areas need treatment and how hard they are to reach, and it usually costs far less than fumigation. Fumigation is priced by the fumigation company, usually by the cubic volume of the house, so that quote comes from them. The inspection is free.

Can you help with a WDO report for a home sale?

Yes. We do Florida WDO inspections on the state’s Form 13645. When we treat a home, we document the species, the areas treated, the product, and the date, so the lender and title company have what they need. If a home is fumigated, the fumigation company documents its own treatment.
